How Do You Know When It's Time for a New Mattress?
You’ve probably heard that you should be replacing your mattress once every 7 - 10 years, right? If your mattress is lumpy, bumpy, dingy, or saggy, those are rather obvious signs it’s time to get a new one.
But your mattress may be giving off subtle signs that it’s ready to be replaced way before you realize you're sinking in your sleep.
If you’ve been thinking about replacing your mattress but aren’t sure if it’s time yet, here are a few tell-tale signs it may be time to start mattress shopping:
You Wake Up Tired
Do you wake up ready to go to bed the next night? Do you get a full 8-hrs, but STILL feel like an extra on the Walking Dead?
If you answered “yes, I DO feel like a zombie” there’s a decent chance your mattress is nearing the end of its lifespan.
An old or uncomfortable mattress can completely ruin your quality of sleep.
Over time, a downshift in the good stuff can have seriously negative effects on your overall health, such as body pain, joint soreness, allergies, mood swings, and sleeplessness.
Sudden or Worsening Allergies
Picture this: it’s Fall. You find yourself waking up stuffy. Congested, even! Your throat is sore and your eyes itch. No one around you is sick — and it doesn’t exactly feel like a cold. What’s going on?
It could be your mattress! Cue the atmospheric horror movie music.
Older mattresses are full of body oils, dead skin cells, and probably more than a few crumbs.
Apart from causing your mattress to put on a few pounds, these things make it a perfect home to all sorts of uninvited guests that can lead to new or worsening allergies:
- Mold
- Mildew
- Dust Mites
So, if you’ve got the sniffles at the wrong time of the year, it may be time to evict those unwelcome invaders.
Sleeping is a Pain in the...
Does your body snap, crackle, and pop like a bowl of cereal when you get out of bed?
A good mattress will support your joints as you sleep, so waking up sore, achy, and in pain is a good indicator that your mattress isn’t cutting it anymore.
As your mattress ages, it loses its ability to properly support your body’s pressure points on distribute your weight evenly. Your back, especially, can be affected by an unsupportive mattress.
Just like that old frenemy who always has something negative to say, it’s probably time to cut that old mattress out of your life.
You Wake Up in a Bad Mood
Waking up in a crabby mood is no fun. It makes the rest of your day a drag to get through.
Sometimes literally.
Plus, it can put the people around you in a bad mood, too.
If waking up in a bad mood has become a normal thing for you, chances are your mattress may be the culprit.
Sleeping on a worn out mattress can rob you of the restorative sleep you need. In turn, a lack of good quality sleep can have disastrous effects on your mood.
It’s Just Not Comfortable
Seems like a no-brainer, right?
Strangely, a surprising amount of us sleep on super uncomfortable mattresses. Want to know what’s even stranger? Most people just sort of deal with it.
There are plenty of reasons people hang on to uncomfortable mattresses for far too long:
- Trying to get money’s worth: after all, they’re supposed to last 7 - 10yrs, right?
- Sentimental value
- Unsure and/or confused about what to replace it with
- It’s expensive
It might seem excessive, but this could be the #1 best reason to replace your mattress. There’s absolutely no shame in simply wanting to be as comfortable as possible.
We spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, more or less. You deserve to spend that time on an allergen-free, supportive, and comfortable mattress.
